Do you follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines?
Do you offer any online marketing services or advice to complement your organic search business?
What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?
What's your experience in my industry?
What's your experience in my country/city?
What's your experience developing international sites?
What are your most important SEO techniques?
How can I expect to communicate with you?
Will you tell me the changes you make and why?

WHAT TO AVOID
Be wary of SEO agencies or consultants that contact you out of the blue.
Anyone that guarantees a #1 ranking within the search engines.
If a company isn't transparent and can't clearly explain the work they intend to do, move on!
You should never 'have' to link to an SEO's website.
Don't be afraid to ask for a cost break down although be realistic that time is money, as are resources.
Guarantee's a ranking on obscure, long tail search terms that will deliver little traffic.
Some shonky operators like to show the broad search volumes for keywords, not the exact match. You can verify this yourself using Google's Keyword Tool, just Google it!
Providers that don't explain the difference between organic/natural results and paid results, Adwords isn't part of SEO.
Choose your service provider wisely, if it's done wrong you may have to start all over!
